75th Independence Day Celebration & Commemoration of the First Vice Chancellor of University of Delhi
The 75th Independence Day was celebrated with enthusiasm and fervour in the precinct of Vice Regal Lodge, University of Delhi by hoisting of the national flag by Prof. P.C. Joshi, Vice Chancellor, University of Delhi, in the presence of other University authorities, officials and staff, and singing of National Anthem and patriotic songs.
The Hon’ble Vice Chancellor congratulated everyone on the occasion of the 75th Independence Day and addressed the gathering. Prof Joshi emphasised on the need of every person to be a patriot; and in his view, a patriot is one who does one’s duty with dedication and selflessness. Stating that the University of Delhi is the pioneer and top University in the country, Prof Joshi drew attention to the need to act to save the environment and the role that the University shall play. He remembered the contribution made by Dr. Virendra Kumar and Prof. C.R. Babu in highlighting the importance of environment and biodiversity. In this context, it was announced that it shall be compulsory for every student to plant a tree in the locale where he belongs and care for it. It was mentioned that the Centre for Himalayan Studies shall be providing technical support in the process. To take the first step towards saving and nurturing the environment, Prof Joshi, along with his team, planted trees.
Further, to commemorate the first Vice Chancellor of this University, i.e. Dr. (Sir) Hari Singh Gaur and celebrate 100 years of glorious existence of the University, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor also inaugurated a grove which was named as ‘Dr. (Sir) Hari Singh Gaur Grove’ in the presence of Prof. Balaram Pani, Dean of Colleges, Prof. Suman Kundu, Director South Campus, Dr. Vikas Gupta, Registrar University of Delhi and other University officials and staff. The grove will act as reservoir of flora and fauna in course of time.
